Best Times to Take Annual Leave 2026 — England & Wales
Not all leave days are equal. This page ranks every significant stretch opportunity in England & Wales in 2026 by efficiency — so you can see where your annual leave is most valuable.

A leave day taken on a random Tuesday in June buys you exactly one day off. A leave day taken on Tuesday 29 December 2026 buys you five consecutive days off. The difference is whether that leave day connects to a bank holiday, a weekend, or both.
How to read this guide
Each opportunity is scored by efficiency ratio — total consecutive days off divided by leave days used. A ratio of 5.0× means one leave day produces five consecutive days off when combined with surrounding bank holidays and weekends. Higher is better.
January — New Year stretch
Efficiency: 3.5× · Leave days: 4 · Days off: 14
New Year's Day falls on Thursday 1 January. The Christmas and Boxing Day bank holidays fall on Friday 25 December and Monday 28 December (substitute). Book Monday 29 December, Tuesday 30 December, Wednesday 31 December and Friday 2 January for 11 consecutive days off from 25 December to 4 January, using 4 leave days.
Verdict: The single best value period of the entire year if you combine Christmas and New Year into one block.
April — Easter stretch
Efficiency: 3.0× · Leave days: 3 · Days off: 9
Easter 2026 is one of the stronger years. Good Friday falls on 3 April and Easter Monday on 6 April. Book Wednesday 1 April, Thursday 2 April and Tuesday 7 April for 9 consecutive days off from Saturday 28 March to Sunday 5 April.
Verdict: The most popular UK leave stretch of the year. Book these dates in January — they go fast.
May — Early May bank holiday
Efficiency: 4.0× · Leave days: 1 · Days off: 4
The Early May bank holiday falls on Monday 4 May. Add Tuesday 5 May as a leave day for 4 consecutive days off. The lowest-cost stretch of the year in terms of leave days.
May — Spring bank holiday
Efficiency: 4.0× · Leave days: 1 · Days off: 4
The Spring bank holiday falls on Monday 25 May. Add Tuesday 26 May for a four-day break from Saturday 23 May to Tuesday 26 May.
May/June — double bank holiday bridge
Efficiency: 2.6× · Leave days: 15 · Days off: 39
For those willing to take a longer summer break, bridging both May bank holidays and the half-term period with a block of leave creates a substantial stretch. The "big summer" play.
August — Summer bank holiday
Efficiency: 4.0× · Leave days: 1 · Days off: 4
The Summer bank holiday falls on Monday 31 August. Add Tuesday 1 September for a four-day break. Often overlooked — which means it is easier to get approved.
December — Christmas stretch
Efficiency: 5.0× · Leave days: 1 · Days off: 5
Christmas Day falls on Friday 25 December with the Boxing Day substitute on Monday 28 December. Book Tuesday 29 December as a single leave day for 5 consecutive days off — the highest single-day efficiency available in 2026.
Verdict: If you only use this guide for one thing, use it for this. One day of leave. Five days off. Book it now.
