Scotland Bank Holidays 2026 — Annual Leave Strategy
Scotland has its own bank holiday schedule with nine holidays — different from England & Wales. Here's how to maximise your Scottish annual leave in 2026.

Scottish workers have nine bank holidays compared to eight in England & Wales, but three of them fall on different dates — and one English bank holiday (Easter Monday) does not apply in Scotland at all. If you are using a generic UK leave planner that does not account for Scottish bank holidays, your calculations will be wrong.

Key differences from England & Wales
- Scotland observes 2 January — England & Wales does not
- Scotland observes St Andrew's Day (30 November) — England & Wales does not
- Scotland does not observe Easter Monday — England & Wales does
- Scotland's August bank holiday is the first Monday (3 Aug) — England's is the last Monday (31 Aug)
Why these differences matter
2 January means Scottish workers start the year with two consecutive bank holidays. Combined with the Christmas bank holidays, you have a natural six-day break from Christmas Eve through 2 January if you book nothing.
No Easter Monday means the Easter stretch requires one more leave day in Scotland to achieve a comparable break.
St Andrew's Day falls on Monday 30 November 2026, giving a free long weekend at the end of November with no leave needed.
August bank holiday on 3 August rather than 31 August means Scottish workers planning a late-summer break should target the first week of August, not the last.
The best leave stretches for Scotland 2026
1. Christmas and New Year combined — best value of the year
Efficiency: 3.7× · Leave days: 3 · Days off: 11
Book Tuesday 29 December, Wednesday 30 December and Thursday 31 December for 11 consecutive days off from Friday 25 December to Monday 5 January. A genuine nearly-two-week break for three leave days — the standout opportunity for Scottish workers in 2026.
2. New Year opening — January jumpstart
Efficiency: 4.0× · Leave days: 1 · Days off: 4
Because Scotland has both 1 and 2 January as bank holidays, the first weekend of January is automatically a four-day break. Add Monday 5 January as a leave day to extend it to five days.
3. Easter stretch — Scotland version
Efficiency: 2.5× · Leave days: 4 · Days off: 10
Without Easter Monday, Scottish workers need four leave days (Monday 30 March, Tuesday 31 March, Wednesday 1 April, Tuesday 7 April) to get 10 consecutive days off at Easter.
4. St Andrew's Day long weekend — Scotland's unique advantage
Efficiency: 4.0× · Leave days: 1 · Days off: 4
St Andrew's Day falls on Monday 30 November 2026. Add Tuesday 1 December as a leave day for a four-day break — a completely unique opportunity Scottish workers have that English workers do not.
5. August bank holiday — early month advantage
Efficiency: 4.0× · Leave days: 1 · Days off: 4
Scotland's August bank holiday falls on Monday 3 August. Add Tuesday 4 August for a four-day break at the start of August — often better weather and cheaper travel than late August.
